Intravaginal rings containing the experimental NNRTIs MIV-150 or MIV-160 produced high drug concentrations in genital fluid and tissue -- higher than levels seen with vaginal gel -- and protected monkeys from infection with an HIV-like simian virus, according to a pair of recent reports from researchers at the Population Council.Other ring candidates under study deliver tenofovir and the NNRTI dapivirine.

	Methadone maintenance therapy is associated with a lower risk of HIV infection among people who inject drugs, though this may be attributable in part to differing behavior among people who do and do not seek treatment for addiction, according to a report in the October 3, 2012, British Medical Journal.

	A key to decreasing HIV risk among Asian Pacific sex workers lies in eradicating stigmatizing laws, according to a report released this month by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The report explores various barriers affecting the ability of sex workers to make sexual health decisions such as the use of condoms as evidence of prostitution, denial of identity documents, and lack of labor rights. 
ICAAC 2012: HIV May Be Shed in Semen Even If Blood Viral Load Is Undetectable

	About 8% of HIV positive gay and bisexual men intermittently had detectable HIV viral load in their semen even when their blood viral load was fully suppressed, researchers reported at the 52nd Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC 2012) this month in San Francisco. This is more than twice the rate seen in a similar study of heterosexual men.
